What is ISCABBS?

I have been busier than usual lately with on-line endeavors.

I have been part of an ancient (by internet standards) on-line community since 1993 --the ISCABBS. This community was started back in 1989, back in those days when only University students and faculty had access to E-mail, and there was no such thing as the World Wide Web.

ISCABBS is a "text only" system where people can log in with a user name and password to check mail, send instant messages to each other, and read and participate in online discussion.

I have recently been appointed the forum moderator of one such discussion, the "Bible and Christianity" forum. I'm supposed to keep religious and non-religious people of widely varying backgrounds and beliefs from attacking each other. ;-)

Back in ISCABBS's glory days, over 5000 people would be logged in at the same time on some busy evenings. Now with easier to use web sites and discussion forums, the numbers have dwindled, now on a typical evening there will be 150 or so people logged in. Most of these are people who used to use the system a long time ago, so it's an older and more mature crowd than you usually see on your typical web site.

In an effort to make the system more accessible and gather more members, some users with computer programming skills have created some ways to access the ISCABBS through a web browser.

If you want to see a list of all the discussions, and what people have posted, you can visit the link below and click on the "Browse as Guest" button:

If you know what RSS is and want to subscribe to my discussion group as an RSS feed, you can add this link to your RSS Newsreader software:

http://rss.iscabbs.com/20.xml <--note this link will not work in an ordinary web browser; you must have an RSS feedreader.

Finally, if you are really adventurous you can login to the bbs the way we did back in the 80s and 90s with the link below. You can login as "Guest" to get read-only access and see what the BBS has to offer, and if you like it you can sign up for a permanent username and password.
